Head and Neck Cancer Sculpture

Head and Neck 3 Head and Neck 4 Head and Neck 5 Head and Neck 6 Head and Neck 7 Head and Neck 8 Head and Neck 9

My recently completed piece for the Brandon C. Gromada Head and Neck Cancer Foundation to help raise a few bucks in an upcoming fundraising auction. The goal of the foundation is to generate funds for the development of innovative and more effective treatments which lead to cures for head and neck cancers, most of which are some type of squamous cell cancer (SCC).

If you wish to learn more about the subject or perhaps make a donation here is a link.

This piece itself, as yet untitled, is constructed of cloth, plaster, wire, “Durabond 90”, and acrylics. The web pattern implies the metal mask a patient wears during radiation treatments for head & neck cancer.

“She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through,
Then passed right by-
And never knew.”

~ Life is short

Vanessa Cardui - Painted Lady

“She liked being reminded of butterflies. She remembered being six or seven and crying over the fates of the butterflies in her yard after learning that they lived for only a few days. Her mother had comforted her and told her not to be sad for the butterflies, that just because their lives were short did not mean they were tragic. Watching them flying in the warm sun among the daisies in their garden, her mother had said to her, see, they have a beautiful life. Alice liked remembering that.”
~Lisa Genova, Still Alice

Ablaze

“It is not revolutions and upheavals that clear the road to better days,
but revelations, and the lavishness of someone’s soul inspired and ablaze.”

Boris Leonidovich Pasternak (1890-1960)

“Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell and when you get angry, get good and angry.

Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”

~ William Saroyan, American writer (1908 – 1981)

Whole of Nature

krohnconservatory 2013 butterflies 107

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

~ Albert Einstein

~ Envy

“Envying another’s beauty will diminish your own.
But when you praise beauty in others your own beauty deepens.”

“I once had been in the middle of a mass chaos and terrible riots.
There, I witnessed how men were truly such as beasts unleashed.”
